Question:

I wanted to ask about pair testing. I know you have the driver controlling the computer and the navigator standing behind saying what to do and then they discuss how to do it best, right? And of course, they switch after a while. But, for example, in a 40 min test session, would you switch after 20 mins, or would you rather switch every 10 mins or even 5? It would be nice to hear some of your experiences with pair testing and what you consider the most important when pair testing.

Suggestion 1:

One thing I found useful is to have two keyboards and mice attached to the computer and you sit side by side. That way you don't have to keep standing up / sitting down, or rearranging the workspace on switching and the navigator can explain what they might mean by demonstrating with keyboard/mouse if needed.

Suggestion 2:

Honestly, I just go by vibe. If I'm the initiator, i'll take the role that feels like the other person is going to get the most value from my presence. If one person is taking too much air time or not putting in or getting out the right energy, then it's time to swap. I've never felt the impetus to be time-based.
